Finished it! I think that makes three in a row. New leaf and all that.
I love Conroy's writing about place, and then, how his characters feel like an extension of place -- landscape is destiny sort of thing.
I found myself frustrated with the dialog in places. I just couldn't imagine the characters talking like this at times and I suspect some info-quote cramming. I was also frustrated by a pop-up quality to several important plot points. Not enough weaving those plot points backward in the novel to make them not seem almost seem unplanned, a little third-draft-ish.
But the themes were good and the place and characters engaging.
Hope I can manage a call-in for the meeting as I'll be out of town.
Loving it so far.
